Music Streaming Suffers Significant Dip Following Nationwide Internet Outages

Premium streams fall 5-22% across artiste catalog in Nigeria on Aug 1, 2024 following nationwide internet connectivity problems.

Most artistes recorded their lowest streaming day across their catalog in months on August 1; artistes with over 50,000 daily streams suffered the biggest drop in streaming while those with less than 50,000 daily streams experienced lower drop on the day. Streaming has since increased in the subsequent days between August 2 – 3 but at a lower rate compared to other Fridays and Saturdays (the connectivity problems persist across the country).

It is interesting to note that this drop in streaming numbers was mostly experienced on Apple Music with artistes experiencing no marked drop on Spotify during the same day.

However, the dip on Apple Music was still enough for most songs to record a week-over-week drop in streaming total across all platforms. No song crossed the 3 million on-demand streams mark in Nigeria during the week of July 25 – August 1, 2024. It marks the first time since the week of April 26 – May 4, 2024 that the number one song on streaming records a lower sum than 3 million on-demand streams. (“Instagram” by Vibez Inc, Muyeez & Seyi Vibez recorded 2.29 million on-demand streams in three days of availability during the tracking period).
